The new timepiece is the result of a partnership between the international Vienna art trading company, Lichterloh, and New York watch designer, Fredi Brodmann. The Normalzeit Vienna Cube Clock wristwatch is an interpretation of a Vienna landmark — the Cube Clock — a public chronometer that has been the inspiration for urban furniture and other designs thanks to its iconic octagonal shape.



The wristwatch — like the clock — features a dial with dots and deltoids for the minutes and hour markers. The wristwatch recalls the Normalzeit Vienna Cube Clock of 1907 – the first of its kind. The clock became an institution in the city, with newer versions installed regularly. Unfortunately, in 2007, the city of Vienna replaced all of the Cube Clocks with new ones. Licterloh purchased the older clocks and all design rights, and in 2011 introduced a new line of furniture, clocks and now watches inspired by the 100-year-old clock. Vienna-born and living in New York, graphic designer Fredi Brodmann was instrumental in transitioning the clock to its current wristwatch format.



The octagonal watches feature white dials, with easy to read black markers and hands. Versions include one on a silicone strap, a red leather strap or on a stainless steel Milanese mesh bracelet. The stainless steel watches house automatic Seiko movements with 41 hours of power reserve and sapphire crystals. They are water resistant to 50 meters and feature full-glow dials. Just 1,907 watches are being produced and each is numbered. They retail from $500 to $695 depending on the version.

Thrift Store Find - Keiser 8-Day 7 Jewel Mechanical Clock

Here is an interesting clock that I recently found at a local thrift store. It's a German-made mechanical clock. It currently shows the time correctly twice per day. It's a potentially interesting project and a bit of a dilemma. I'd like to get it working again. However, there are no extra funds for a serious professional repair. Yet, an amateur repair has a good chance of simply making a mess. Putting a quartz movement on the back and calling it a day is a possibility, but would destroy any "collector value."



The clock is about 5-inches in diameter with gold tone hands and markings. The background of the dial is a simple grid.

I took the cover off of the movement to reveal the complex 7 Jewel movement underneath. I stopped at this point because I would require a smaller screwdrivers, some sort of cleaner for the parts, a parts container, and most importantly a clue about how to put it back together again!

The movement appears to be a two-deck affair with lots of gears and small pieces.

Since it is a wind up clock, there is also a spring to worry about. I believe it is contained in the drum shown below. Any tension on the spring would need to be released carefully.

This gear assembly looks really cool. It would be fun to actually see it in motion! The question is how and when . . .

One thing that I noticed is that some parts are missing. There is a fixed winding key screwed into the back that winds the alarm bell. However, there was no winding key for the movement itself. It seems possible that the clock might work if it were simply wound. Ah well, I may actually have to read up on this topic.

Goodbye Casio – Hello Suunto

Well, it was time to say goodbye to my trusty old Casio G-Shock, which I sold for a few bucks on Timezone. Here’s the old G-Shock:



It was a trusty watch, and always worked well. However, it didnt’ have any special features besides a Chronograph, Alarm and Timer. I wanted something a bit more high-tech, and the Suunto Core fit the bill exactly. I avoided the more fancy models like the Suunto Elementums, but I really like the all plastic and rubber Suunto Core. Doesn’t hurt that it looks great too! Makes me feel pro when I wear it with the Barometergraph on the main face!







I’m pretty darn happy with my Suunto. I think I will pick up one of the lugged straps and install that eventually. They are not cheap at $60US + Shipping, but I think it would add some appeal to the watch.

I should add that I am not very familiar with the multitude of Quartz multifunction watches out there, and only briefly looked at some Casio Pathfinder watches along with the more subdued styling of the Suuntos. I found most Suunto’s rather ugly except the Core line, and the Pathfinders were just a bit too flashy for me. I did like their Solar Polar feature, however. Would have liked to see that on the Suunto.
